Laboratory
GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION AND LAND USE PLANNING

Department of Soil Science

About Us

Geospatial Information and Land Use Planning Lab was first established in 2003, along with the initiative for  setting the Geographic Information System (GIS) course in the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University. The primary aim was to strengthen geospatial discipline and also to respond to many opportunities in the job market. This lab then continues to develop not only to serving students who take courses offered related to (geo)spatial, but also in strengthening collaborations with many institutions. In serving research and development, the lab always involves various experts from many different disciplines in varying areas of study. In 2024 we form a Thematic Research Group (TRG) – Geospatial for Sustainable Land Use (GIS-LANDUSEto deal with spasial issues in sustainable landuseThe principle of green economy becomes crucial, i.e., sustainable use of land resources and environmental management, while still paying a great attention to the production and resource value for the shake of prosperity. Thus, this research group focuses on research and development which is multi-dimensional, involving various fields of expertise.

Research Areas

This lab serves a wide range of reserach area, ranging from land surveys and identification of various biophysical and sosio-economic phenomena, to spatial analysis and spatial decision-making scenarios within different perspectives. Therefore, it serves two inseparable groups of reserach areas. First, research related to land resources disciplines, which puts much emphasis on science and technology related to, including survey and mapping (cartography), remote sensing, and GIS. Second,  research related to the application in the context of a multidisciplinary field in socio-economics. With a such, we use GIS integrated with various technologies and analytical tools such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Digital Image Analysis (DIA), Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), Statistics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). With the GIS-LANDUSE research group, we put much emphasis on the multidiciplinary studies (biophysical, economic, social, and culture) within a spatial context.
